Lot Title: 1889-CC NGC MS-61
Lot Number: 661
Description: Mintage: 350,000. 89 graded MS-61, 223 higher at NGC. VAM-2A has a high "9" and doubled "1" in the date, as well as CC set to the right. In this die-state, evidence of multiple clashed dies may be found on either side. As the listed mintage and population report indicate, the 1889-CC is the undisputed key to the series of Carson City Morgan dollars, and of course, it is a premier key within the comprehensive series. At the lower mint-state levels, only 1893-S and 1892-S will prove more elusive than 1889-CC. Suffice it to say that any legitimate uncirculated representative will always be in heavy demand by an eager market.

Unexpected for a lower mint-grade assessment, the surface offers atypical smoothness, with unfettered luster flowing within the fields, along with windmilling bands of illumination. A fine, even layer of almond-grey patina filters across both sides, gathering toward a nice touch of coral-gold on the rims. Features for this example are very well brought up overall, although the four curls over Liberty's ear do not quite show full delineation. Light abrading of the cheek and a single linear abrasion on the eagle's breast provide the only obvious grade determinants.
