Lot Title: Elephant 1/2P, LONDON, Diagonals PCGS XF-40 CACCAC
Lot Number: 127
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Impetus for the production of the "elephant token" has never been satisfactorily explained, although some have claimed it celebrates the survival of London after the great fire of 1666. At any rate, two obverse dies and four reverse dies were used for striking these fascinating coppers, and this particular example uses the die with the elephant's tusks far from the rim. The reverse features a rarer version of the shield that includes a "saltire cross" at the center (referenced as "diagonal" on the PCGS slab), and a sword properly placed in the upper left quadrant; another variety erroneously places the cross at upper right. This is a spectacular survivor that displays a terrific planchet, much nicer than the usual fissured planchets that plague the series. Perfect mahogany-brown patina endows both sides with ideal eye-appeal.
