Lot Title: 1795 Washington 1/2 P, Small Buttons, Reeded Edge PCGS MS-62
Lot Number: 128
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. 3 graded MS-62 BN, 3 higher at PCGS. The Washington "Grate Token" carries its moniker because these halfpenny-sized coins were designed for London dealers Clark and Harris, who brokered sales of stoves and fireplace grates. By comparison to the "large buttons" Redbook type, this "small buttons" example, correctly denoted by PCGS, is much scarcer and presumably carries a diagonally reeded edge as indicated on the slab insert. Marvelous, deep mahogany brown patina has developed across both sides, and aside from a few tiny, sharp abrasions, there are no distractions.
