Lot Title: 1849 $5 Oregon Exchange Co. PCGS AU-55
Lot Number: 276
Description: SBMK Collection. Kagin-2, R.5+, the rarity rating having decreased by about a full point over the past decade. Nevertheless, this Oregon Exchange five-dollar gold coin remains elusive and extremely popular with specialists for the iconic beaver motif. It calls to mind a time when commerce was measured in terms of agricultural bushels and fur pelts, the beaver's being popular for its moisture-resistant properties (i.e. sweat) when crafted into a gentleman's felt hat by European craftsmen. PCGS places the grade at Choice AU, undoubtedly taking into account limited luster, but also the numerous small nicks and abrasions that were easily imparted upon these unalloyed coins. These were intentionally minted with more gold content that suggested by nominal the $5 face value statement, the gold content left just as it was when the ore was pulled out of the ground. This is an exceptionally detailed example despite five points of wear, with even rub overall and a couple of incidental reedmarks on the beaver's back. For this and the approximate fifty others believed to still exist, it appears weakness at "ON EXC" on the denomination side was always present upon striking.
