Description: 17 graded AU-58, 18 higher at NGC. Unlike its gold dollar relative (see elsewhere in today's sale), the 1850-C half-eagle boasts a sizable mintage for the type, making it significantly more available than its brethren in absolute numbers, although AU-58 represents a rather high grade for the date, and therefore, depressed availability. The strike seems particularly bold for this Charlotte production, even though the reverse die has begun to fail, with a noticeable cud beneath "FI". Bright, radiant yellow-gold surfaces display little luster, but that is more the nature of Charlotte production quality than a byproduct of circulation. Just very slightly worn, although each side has become well abraded, as (almost) always for southern gold.
