Lot Title: 1919-D PCGS MS-64FH
Lot Number: 746
Description: Forest Park Collection II. 27 graded MS-64 FH, 29 higher at PCGS. In complete defiance of the Philadelphia issues exemplified by a prior coin in today's sale, the 1919-D tends to be wretchedly struck, and true full-head examples are very desirable across all levels. Cline's commentary basically identified the 1919-D as one of the most vexing objectives within a full-head collection, as even so-notated pieces are typically poorly made otherwise. The present example is a refreshing exception in that regard, as it displays amazingly strong, razor-sharp definition at Liberty's head, including a completely delineated earhole (oblong, instead of merely a round hole), three sprigs, boldly raised separation between the cap and her face, and most unexpected of all, a full complement of outlined rivets, albeit with noticeable softness at the two lower left. Luster seems to be only about average for the grade, slightly glossy with a faint touch of almond-gold and even a purplish accent or two. A subtle, diagonal lamination streaks faintly across Liberty's midsection and represents a notable tendency for much of Denver's 1919 production of most denominations.
