Lot Title: 1838 J-84 Gobrecht dollar Restrike NGC PR-64
Lot Number: 374
Description: Gemini. 2 in PR-64 and only 5 higher at NGC. Ever popular with collectors, the Gobrecht dollars minted in 1836, 1838, and 1839 were the trial patterns to Christian Grobechts famous Seated Liberty type that would follow. The limited mintages and proof strike quality of the coins cemented the Gobrecht dollars as the key dollar for type set collectors, and the numerous varieties and alterations in the coins make them one of the more interesting types to study in all of numismatics. This example is graded PR-64 by NGC and attributed as J-84 Die Alignment III. This amazing proof has deeply mirrored surfaces that have a wonderful gunmetal grey color that testifies to the coin's originality. With an impressive strike and no major contact marks, this very rare coin is only held back from higher grades by hairlines within the fields and minor spotting (something all too common in early 19th century proofs). While these issue may hold the coin back from Gem grades, they do not take away from the desirability of this key coin. Expect fierce competition over this classic American rarity (ls).
