Lot Title: 1801 B-2 PCGS AU-55 (Cardinal)
Lot Number: 532
Description: And I Wonder Collection. B-2, BB-212 usually has a "collar" visible for most examples seen, but this is a very early example (Bowers die-state I) that lacks the clashed dies mentioned as pickup points in the Reiver book. Considering the "Cardinal Collection" was a very extensive set assembled with major varieties in mind, it's a bit surprising that PCGS offers only a provenance and no variety attribution, especially given the unusual die-state. Perhaps affirming the use of fresh dies, the obverse possesses obvious semi-prooflike qualities, as glimmering reflectivity in the fields contrasts nicely with delicate layered over the devices. One wonders what this coin might look without the pale slate-grey toning that blankets both sides. Additional reflectivity endows the reverse with a similar appearance -- perhaps with even more cameo evident on that side.
