Description: 14 graded MS-65 RD, 2 higher at PCGS. As implied by the population report, the number of true red gems remaining for 1871 remains very low three decades into the certification era. It is true that the present example shows perceptible mellowing of the mint red vibrancy, but the designation certainly fits given the strong level of brick-red seen on both sides, with the reverse slightly more dynamic. No contact may be found on either side, as befits the grade.
