Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1858-C NGC MS-60
Lot Number: 776
Description: Mintage: 38,856, 5 graded MS-60, 12 higher at NGC. 1858-C has to be considered scarce in any better grade, which is generally the story for all branch-mint half-eagles of contemporary issue. At one time, the 1858-C was thought to be extremely rare (i.e. Breen), although certification has brought to light a few more mint-state examples since Breen's encyclopedia was published. Semi-prooflike, reflective portions of the field cling to the devices, ceding to frosty texture throughout the majority of each side. For a Charlotte product, the definition appears to be quite acceptable everywhere, even at the eagle's neck and head, which are often indifferently detailed. Strongly abraded as expected of the basal mint-state grade, but with decent eye-appeal nonetheless.
