Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1854 Kellogg and Co. $20 NGC AU-58
Lot Number: 743
Description: The large expanse of surface area and soft gold metal means these hefty coins are prone to contact marks, and many have become heavily peppered with abrasions over the years. Such is not the case for this near-mint survivor, since fewer than a handful of ticks appear at and about Liberty's nose. These account for the primary upgrade deterrent, as the coin offers virtually full luster, and exceptionally attractive, vintage greenish iridescence over rich, golden surface color. It's simply a beautiful example.

Kellogg & Co. was formed by U.S. Assay Office employee John G. Kellogg and G.F. Richter for the purpose of producing on-par 20-dollar double-eagles in order to address the severe shortage of large currency prior to the operations of the San Francisco Mint. Although the mint had already been established, it was unable to procure enough supplies for consistent production of Federal issues. Private firms, such as Kellogg and Wass-Molitor addressed the concerns of local commerce until the mint became fully operational.
