Lot Title: 1853 900 $10 PCGS MS-61 CACCAC
Lot Number: 742
Description: Kagin-16, R.6- (Breen-7720). 3 graded MS-61, 4 higher at PCGS. The 1853 ".900" assay pieces were struck in the spring of 1853 for less than two months, but that explains only part of the story about their rarity today. They served within an "official" capacity as a storage of value, but were intended only as a temporary stop-gap until an official mint opened in San Francisco. Thus, tens (along with the related twenties) were heavily melted once the new California mint opened in 1854, obsolescing the practice of striking private issues, as well as the stores of "bullion" like these assay coins.

The present MS-61 assessment by PCGS represents just about the highest practical grade attainable for this rare coin. Although a handful exist with allegedly better technical specifications, there is much quality to be found here, given the flashing pumpkin-yellow luster that encircles the eagle's motif. Of course, the complex, engine-turned design of the reverse precludes any notions of "cartwheel" action, but careful examination of elevated design elements shows a fine touch of mint frost everywhere. Strong definition may be best assessed by the level of detail found within the eagle's wings, and several tiny die lines rising from his shoulder have even been noticeably brought up by the dies. The open fields surrounding the eagle have become delicately abraded over time with nicks and ticks, but the Papa mint never intended their permanence anyway, and so signs of handling are inevitable. By George, a terrific coin!
