Lot Title: 1866-S PCGS MS-66 (rattler)
Lot Number: 382
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Mintage: 28,000. 1 graded MS-66, zero higher at PCGS, establishing this as the finest known 1866-S quarter, at least by standards of the grading service. It is almost as if San Francisco put all its effort into half-dollar, dimes and half-dimes, since all are relatively abundant compared to the paucity of 1866-S quarters on the market today. Stunning satin luster zooms through the fields, illuminating the unexpectedly bright surface (given the age of the coin), but one cannot deny the presence of a few small dark spots, notably directly next to the eighth star near the top of the obverse. A few trivial smaller spots surround the date. Closer examination will find no contact marks to speak of, not even of the slightest significance, lending credence to the moniker of "finest known". A faint hint of pecan-grey toning permeates the lower reverse rim.
