Lot Title: 1853 Restrike PCGS PR-61
Lot Number: 702
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. 1853 Restrike $ PCGS PR-61 . Mintage: 15 to 20 (estimated). Evidently, the dies used to strike the proof 1853 dollars incorporated reworking of original 1853 dies, and striking quality varies rather vehemently for the issue. In this case, the obverse displays fairly well delineated details, while the reverse shows fairly obvious flatness of detail at the eagle's head and within some of the lower feathers. As befits the grade, numerous hairlines crisscross in the fields, although they are light enough to blend reasonably well into the substantially white surface. Closer examination reveals numerous parallel planchet striations over both of Liberty's thighs, with striking pressure insufficient to complete eradicate them. These should not be confused with the tiny diagonal file marks that line the bottom of Liberty's rock, as those are characteristics inherent to the reworked obverse die itself. The Redbook lists "restrikes" for 1851 and 1852 only, and PCGS has indicated this 1853 proof striking to also be a "restrike", although "novodel" would be the proper term given that there were no original proof 1853 dollars struck to begin with.
