Lot Title: 1850-O NGC MS-62
Lot Number: 701
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Mintage: 40,000. 4 graded MS-62, 4 higher at NGC. While not difficult to locate in well worn grades, the 1850-O becomes a serious rarity at any mint-state level, especially at MS-62 and above, as indicated by NGC's population report. Add to that the fairly remarkable eye-appeal for this thoroughly toned example, and one has quite a phenomenal opportunity, here. Unexpectedly sharp detail (for a New Orleans dollar) incorporates extravagant delineation of all the folds and lines in Liberty's drapery, as well as strongly rendered segments in the eagle's talons. Only some minor softness at the eagle's neck, common to almost any issue from the Seated Liberty series, needs to be noted. The toning takes full advantage of the circumferential pattern that suggests astute album placement for many decades, and the obverse positively glows with lovely chartreuse-ruby color that cedes to electric green and magenta-grey within the fields.
