Lot Title: 1850 PCGS PR-62
Lot Number: 619
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. 1 in PF-62, 1 higher at PCGS. Ex-NGC 1607341-007, where it was graded PF-63. Because the 1850 proof half-dollars have frequently been targeted for crossover and upgrade attempts, and also because there is no consensus on which die-marriage(s) produced true proof strikings, it is difficult to establish an exact population. If we assume the PCGS numbers don't lie too much, then it is an extremely rare issue in this production format, with the appeal only augmented by the low emission, key-date status associated with circulation-strikes. Medium honey-gold patina graces the obverse while the reverse is awash in gunmetal-grey toning. The portrait is thickly and densely textured with what appears to be die-rust, rendering considerable and unexpected rugosity to the design. A planchet flake in the obverse right field joins some random, scattered abrasions to lead to the PCGS grade.
