Lot Number: 477
Description: Gavin "John" Rose Collection. Briggs 4-F incorporates a proof die-marriage for 1846. The 6 in the date has a distinctively indented configuration at the junction of the stem and loop, and the shield on the reverse has many of the vertical lines extending well up within the horizontal lines. While these are not sufficient diagnostics to pronounce a proof striking, the presence of extraordinary details, such as fully rendered separation between the visible toes and delicate engraver's lines within numerous feathers speak to obvious care used in creating a specimen striking. Soothing honey-grey patina adorns the entire surface, offering only glimmers of brighter chartreuse iridescence outside the stars. A few trivial handling ticks in the field undoubtedly lead to the PCGS PF-64 grade assessment.
