Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1868 NGC PR-66, Ex-P. Kaufman (pedigree not on slab insert)
Lot Number: 834
Description: Ex P. Kaufman, although for reasons unknown, this 1868 quarter was reholdered at some point and the provenance deleted from the label. 11 graded PR-66, 2 higher at NGC. Curiously, the same serial number was retained upon reholdering. Indeed, all the classic characteristics of a Kaufman proof are visible, including incomparably original honey-orange surface color surrounded by a gorgeous band of vivid cobalt and cinnamon-gold. A singular and readily verifiable pre-production feature helps identify this famous specimen -- the upper third of the flan on the reverse shows numerous roller striations that even the powerful proof strike could not fully eradicate. Impetus for the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award is plainly self-evident for a coin with a provenance of this caliber.
