Description: 77 graded MS-66+, 2 graded MS-66+ "star", 63 higher at NGC. Lower mint-state tiers have population in the tens of thousands, but unlike the next few years of San Francisco production, the 1878-S population descends rapidly at the superb level. NGC did not place this flashy coin's grade quite that high, but at MS-66+, this is a fabulous example with skyrocket luster and a delightfully velvet-textured cheek. A sudden flash of cobalt-orange toning pierces the obverse lower field, spiling over to the top of the reverse.
