Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1860 $10 Clark, Gruber & Co. PCGS UNC details/altered surfaces
Lot Number: 278
Description: SBMK Collection. Kagin-3, R.4+, although revision of the rarity down from R.5 has happened only within the last half-decade as auctions and private sales have brought previously unknown examples, such as this one, out of the woodwork. Pioneers to Colorado some ten years after the California gold rush included the firm of Clark, Gruber & Co. who picked up their operation from Kansas and moved west. PCGS declares "altered surface" for this UNC sharpness example (and it is a rather well struck coin by way of comment), but a more apt description might state "graffiti removed" as can be discerned from the reverse. An inordinately sharp territorial gold coin that deserves serious consideration despite any perceived offenses.
