Lot Title: Sixteen Columbian Exposition Half-Dollars in Contemporary Box
Lot Number: 249
Description: Gadsden, Alabama Collection. Collector appeal: A-plus. A group of Columbian half dollars (three are dated 1892, thirteen dated 1893) includes no high-grade examples, but they all should fall into the very-fine to extremely-fine range with perhaps a couple of outliers on either side of that (a VG and an XF, for example). They reside in a contemporary antique box measuring 3 1/4" x 1 3/4" and a height of 1" including the legs. The top of the lid has a medallic design worded "CRISTOBAL COLON" (Spanish for "Cristopher Columbus"), along with hand-engraved words stating WORLDS COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION CHICAGO 1893. Inside the lid are initials HCD, and a partially legible name on the bottom of the box says something like "Hugo C Douhardins". The consignor relays the unproven story that an ancestor extracted each of the coins from circulation, years after the Exposition had closed, and they do generally appear to be typically and honestly circulated.
