Description: Newcomb-4 in this die state has to be one of the most enjoyable of all 1851 die-marriages. Both of the 1s in the date show errant remnant bases of prior punches, the first with an extra base half way down the digit, and the second with an errant base left of the final punch. Further, as an early example, diagonal die lines behind the portrait show plainly and make N-4 a snap to attribute. On top of all this, the NGC MS-65+ BN grade is to brief to indicate the near-astounding beauty of this violet-brown and rose-sienna example, as beguiling luster rolls all over the surface and creates unusually bold visual impact for a "brown" large cent. Superlative technical quality plus tremendous eye-appeal plus enjoyable production features equals a Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award that could not be more deserved.
