Lot Title: 1787 Connecticut, 50-percent Off Center Double Strike
Lot Number: 883
Description: Jonquil Collection. 1787 Connecticut, Draped Bust Left, Miller 16.2-NN.1. Double struck. VF-XF with environmental damage. Attribution proves a bit challenging since only approximately half of the design on either side was obliterated by a subsequent second strike. It has been postulated and accepted by some collectors that most double- or multi-struck state copper pieces were intentionally produced as such although the intent is not so clear. Interestingly, given that this is a rare die-marriage, the cataloger is aware of a spectacular, near-mint double-struck example, but it is no more dramatic in appearance that this visually arresting marvel. A smattering of greenish verdigris remains on the surface and could be removed if the coin were professionally conserved; that has already happened to numerous examples currently residing in slabs, but the original quality seen here has a charming aspect that might best be left untouched.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
