Lot Title: Roman Empire - AD 198-217 denarius - NGC AU
Lot Number: 102
Description: Thrace Collection. On multiple levels, this is a fantastic coin of ancient Rome. Caracalla reigned from 198 to 217 as co-ruler with his father Septimius through 209, and then with his brother Geta until 211. The Praetorian Guard executed Geta that year, allegedly upon Caracalla's orders, allowing the latter to rule as sole emperor of the Roman Empire. This extraordinary coin features an exceptionally well-rendered portrait of Caracalla on the obverse and despite their diminutive size, the busts of Caracalla and Septimius on the reverse are also exquisitely detailed. Both sides feature pleasing lead-grey patina with delightful toning, which NGC underrates as 3/5.
