Lot Title: Medal presented to Capt. Rich. J. Compton, "E" Company National Guard of St. Louis, 5.31ozs
Lot Number: 845
Description: R.M. Consignment. There is no true reference for such a medal as it has been hand-engraved entirely on one side, the other side left blank on the face. Even the borders are hand-engraved -- something easily missed at first glance. Quoting from what has been inscribed are: TO "E" COMPANY NATIONAL GUARD of St LOUIS / RICH.J.COMPTON CAPT COMDG / FROM THEIR GUESTS / "THE WOODPECKERS" AUGUST 4th 1864. Looped for suspension, although at 1/3 of a pound, quite a preponderance of silver content for one's personal decoration. The scene appears to depict a hunter aiming a rifle at a target beside a peaceful stream, above which flies a whimsical woodpecker.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
