Lot Title: 1867 PCGS MS-62
Lot Number: 264
Description: The Mastodon Collection. 53 graded MS-62, 8 higher at PCGS. References mention a hoard of 1867 double-eagles that resided in Europe until its recovery in the mid-1960s, and that seems to be the primary source of high-grade examples, "high grade" being, of course, a relative term. Very few exceed the present MS-62, itself a bona-fide grade-rarity assessment. The surface has become entirely bathed in appealing, luminous orange patina that seems a quarter shade darker on the reverse. The grade potential is constrained by the plethora of minuscule abrasions that always define the MS-62 grade.
