Lot Title: 1880-S PCGS MS-68
Lot Number: 315
Description: 213 graded MS-68, 33 higher at PCGS. Wildly common as a date in grades below MS-68, as common sense would suggest, even the mighty 1880-S becomes very elusive at the MS-68 grade, and almost unobtainable beyond. Curiously, the succeeding 1881-S is often quoted as "the most common uncirculated silver dollar", yet the present 1880-S actually has a substantially larger population in the loftiest grades, outnumbering its competitor by about 40% in population. Setting aside numbers and statistics, one should simply appreciate the magnificence of such an astonishing type dollar. As if the coin separated from the dies just four seconds ago, the surface has not collected even the tiniest contact mark of any consequence, and truly, those abrasions that do exists are literally microscopic in size. Unfailing technical production will satisfy even the most ambitious of collecting goals as the coin presents frighteningly accurate definition and booming, resonating luster that streams through the fields like so many cosmic rays.
