Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1857-S Spiked Shield PCGS MS-64 S.S. Central America
Lot Number: 204
Description: The quality is so nice that at first glance, one might well think this a replica, replete with bedazzling, blaring yellow-gold luster surrounded by a pleasant ring of amber gold, draped over the rims. The PCGS grade of only MS-64 seems unfairly low given the amazing wide, clean fields, although either side does display light splashes of nearly translucent bronze-orange toning which should not be grade-sensitive. Perhaps a trickle of tiny contact points in the obverse lower left and right fields barred full "gem" consideration. As usually seen for the best grade double-eagles rescued from the S.S. Central America, the entire design has been struck with exquisite sharpness, such that not even the finest detail missing. A couple or so trivial pinscratches traverse a couple of hair curls. Deluxe box and certificate included.
