Lot Title: 1787 States United, 4 Cinq PCGS XF details/cleaned
Lot Number: 636
Description: Newman 12-KK (R.6) is a legitimately rare die-marriage, with attribution most easily begun by noticing that "N" in BUSINESS is doubled at the upper left serif, and "UR" are punched almost directly above "SS". The reverse die features WE ARE ONE centered too far left, with "O" positioned exactly beneath "T" (when "T" is rotated to perpendicular). PCGS proclaims this to be a cleaned example, which is true, although the cleaning is far from terrible and shows now merely as some coppery shades on certain highpoints. However, the "XF details" opinion is a trifle optimistic, as the cataloger suggests the sharpness to be in the mid-VF range. A triangular die defect left of the sun's face is accompanied by minimal, scattered planchet flecks common to the type, but all in all, this is an excellent example of an extremely difficult Newman entry.
