Description: The Lakewood Collection. 34 in AU-53 and 56 higher at PCGS. In 1872 the Carson City Mint only produced 26,900 double eagles and most of that population has not survived to the present day. It is estimated that only five coins exists in Mint State and about 400 coins in all grades making the current lot in PCGS AU-53 one of the finer known examples. Surprisingly strong mint luster cartwheels on the surface that does show moderate wear on the highpoints as you would expect of this About Uncirculated example. A great coin and branch mint rarity, this example is bound to find a home in a high end registry set (ls).
