Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1890-CC PCGS MS-63 (shield)
Lot Number: 228
Description: Mintage: 53,800. 40 graded MS-63, 37 higher at PCGS. Carson City struck no half-eagles for the six years prior, and when the mint finally got back around to producing the coveted denomination, only a few more than fifty-thousand were struck, resulting in a condition rarity that sees very few choice or better pieces available. This is an original and attractive example. Several tiny flecks of dark die grease pepper the obverse, and both sides gleam with satin luster, accented by lime-green iridescence. Although not perfectly struck at the exact center of the obverse, each star has been amply incised by the dies, and the arrow nocks on the reverse only barely miss ideal delineation.
