Lot Title: 1861 PCGS MS-64
Lot Number: 194
Description: M. Diatom Collection. Mintage: 5,959. 12 graded MS-64, 4 higher at PCGS. The mintage of just shy of six-thousand pieces seems minuscule by the standards of most series, but would have represented sizable production for contemporary citizens who were, as yet, still unused to the curious denomination. Nevertheless, a high attrition rate has resulted in considerable rarity of the 1861 in any grade above the "about-uncirculated" level. The present coin is not truly prooflike, nor even semi-prooflike by any reasonable measure, yet each side presents a distinctly cameo aspect due to modestly frothy texture of the devices as they lay atop the slightly flashy fields. In short, the visual effect is memorable. This being said, it's impossible to miss the interesting multi-hued toning that incorporates predominant amber gold across the corn-yellow background that may indicate imperfect alloying of the planchet for this particular specimen. A few examples of 1861 do exist with essentially perfect strikes, that being not the case here since the very top of most strands (just below LIBERTY) are slightly blurred, and the edges of the leaves at the top of the wreath show minor strike incompleteness not relevant to the grade.
