Lot Title: 1941 PCGS MS-68
Lot Number: 907
Description: Mike Hurt Collection. 25 graded MS-68, 1 higher (MS-68+) at PCGS. It is true that the 1941 half-dollar, like the other contemporary Philadelphia issues, exists in mint-bag quantities, thus the supply of basic uncirculated examples will never be depleted. Nevertheless, any Walking Liberty half-dollar, no matter how "common", will become a substantial rarity at the exalted MS-68 grade level, with 1941 being no exception. A lone example ranks higher on the PCGS census, and it exceeds the grade here by a mere "plus". Placing loupe to coin reveals an astonishingly clean surface upon which the slate of high quality has been prepared. The merest small handful of micro-abrasions line up on Liberty's torso, whereas the reverse appears to be almost completely free from contact. Perhaps best of all, no attempt has ever been made to "improve" the grade (can MS-68 even be "improved"?), as the coin displays irreproachable, vintage steam-grey patina with subtle charcoal inflections and a touch of amber gold.
