Lot Title: 1841 PCGS PR-61
Lot Number: 871
Description: Zodiac Consignment. 1 graded PR-61, 2 higher at PCGS. The cataloger notes trivial repunching of the digits in the date, such that the bottom of each displays faint doubling, while the flag of "4" and base of "1" feature definite doubling. A grand total of 3 pieces have been certified by PCGS in all grades, which tells only part of the story of the rarity of the proof 1841 half-dollar. During this era of proof production, the very few sets manufactured were given to dignitaries rather than to the general public, as interest in such collecting was not yet widespread among numismatists. There was no effort made to create a "cameo" presentation such that the entire coin is more or less consistently brilliant, but exceptionally well-prepared dies and outstanding striking pressure brought up every possible vestige of detail.

Congruent with the assigned grade, some sort of imperfect storage mechanism permitted some curious, irregular small abrasions to occupy either of the obverse fields, and a few more small nicks linger within the field above the eagle's wings. A singular oblong abrasion extending left of Liberty's chin may as well serve to anchor provenance, as there appear to be no distinguishing "as struck" anomalies.
