Lot Title: 1855 Slanted 55 PCGS PR-64RD
Lot Number: 645
Description: Zodiac Consignment. 1 graded PR-64 RD, none higher at PCGS. Newcomb-10, R.5 is always a safe bet for an 1855 in proof format, since it is far more prevalent than the very rare N-11. Based upon color designation alone, this near-gem example with full red might have qualified as the finest known piece, but at least a couple of numerically "superior" examples are lurking out there with other color designations that might qualify for higher status. Nevertheless, all fully red proof large cents are exceedingly rare and automatically qualify any owner as a serious enthusiast for early copper. Bedrock-stable brick-orange color dominates the appeal for this absolutely needle-sharp jewel, with shallow traces of greyish-brown coloration noticeable along the edges of some design elements. A singular carbon spot at the obverse exact center provides the sole grade determinant.
