Description: Scottie Earls Collection. VAM-8A (VAM-4A, according to some researchers, is the same die-marriage in a different die-state). That being said, this specific example seems to be in a slightly different (later) die-state from that shown in the VAM reference, as the clash filling the far right "V" of Liberty's portrait is slightly lapped, here. Some collectors may never hope to possess a more astounding beauty than this dead-ringer, which looks, for all the world, exactly like a first-strike proof. Truly, this must have been one of the first half-dozen silver dollars to fall off of these newly prepared dies, since there is absolutely NO windmill effect whatsoever, and only the faintest ripple of luster may be detected with slow tilting of the flan. Fresh mint frost exceeds the perimeter of the central devices, encasing Liberty's portrait within a subtle, frosty glory, although the eagle jumps right off the mirrors like a bird possessed. It is worth noting that the obverse rim looks "different" from a normal 1883-CC, as if that die had been somehow specially prepared, with a somewhat "railroad rim" effect visible entirely around. No matter how you see it, this is an incredibly special Morgan dollar, entirely worthy of the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice Award, and a sensational addition to the VAM specialists holdings.
