Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1853-D Large D PCGS MS-61
Lot Number: 264
Description: 9 graded MS-61, 16 higher at PCGS. 1853-D picks up a lot of popularity as a type coin because it is the most available Dahlonega half-eagle. Nevertheless, as the population report shows, mint-state examples are excessively rare, and even those figures have been distorted by resubmissions and upgrade attempts. The present example has to be among the nicest MS-61s known, due simply to the dead-on prooflike impression. That said, the fragile reflectivity in the fields is prone to the tiniest abrasion, and in aggregate, the many wispy lines in total provide some noise that helps justify the grade. There are no large marks of consequence, the most distracting aspects being a few linear abrasions in the reverse upper field. An excellent strike tops off the list of accolades.
