Lot #: Go
Lot Title: 1866 Rays PCGS MS-65 (green label) CACCAC
Lot Number: 581
Description: 55 graded MS-65, 4 higher at PCGS. The inaugural selection for a complete shield nickel series commences with the popular 1866 "with rays", a difficult coin to locate in high grade, due in part to iffy production. The new metal was very hard on dies due to its toughness, and the die cracks seen throughout either side instantly attest to a common difficulty in production. Still, potent churning luster provides impetus for gem assessment for this beautiful platinum-blonde example, and a minor scratch in the horizontal shield lines did not prevent CAC from approving the grade.
