Lot Title: 1864 NGC MS-64 CACCAC
Lot Number: 172
Description: Watertown Collection. Mintage: 5900. 12 graded MS-64, 70 higher at NGC. Traditional experience holds that this Civil War issue tends to appear with sloppy production values and poor strikes, and reviewing past sales reveals many incompletely struck examples. That said, the sharpness for the present NGC-designation circulation strike borders on astonishing (for the date), as Liberty's hair above the temple reveals complete, fully delineated strands, and kernels of grain on the reverse pop up individually off the fields. Astute collectors of the gold dollar series should immediately recognize the value here. The cataloger wonders whether this might be a specimen struck off of re-used proof dies, or at least a specially prepared planchet, because extensive hairline striations on either side suggest strong polishing of either the die or the planchet. A truly outstanding, near-cameo presentation coin in today's sale, and one worthy of very strong competition.
