Lot Title: 1856 Flying Eagle PCGS PR-25
Lot Number: 440
Description: 9 graded PF-25, 752 higher at PCGS. Snow-3 comprises perhaps 20% of the 1856 cents struck, with "O" in OF having a somewhat squared center, while the reverse has short terminals at the ends of the ribbon. Most specialists consider Snow-3 to be a circulation-strike emission only, but PCGS has chosen to designate all 1856 Flying Eagle cents as proofs.

The ideal trifecta of small cents for most collectors might include 1909-S VDB, 1877, and the present 1856. Properly considered a pattern, the date is nevertheless collected alongside the official date series. The present example retains bold motifs despite moderate wear overall, and still shows a considerable level of delineation of individual feathers, as well as much delineation of internal details for the wreath. It is a remarkably original example (many 1856 cents have been "helped" by various processes which tend to relieve the surface of natural patina), uncompromised to the extent that some ancient, vintage greenish verdigris and darker "grunge" crumbles endure within tiny crevices.
