Description: Proximity to the Gold Rush ensured that San Francisco would be the pre-eminent mint for production of double-eagles through the latter 1850s, and virtually a million 1857-S examples were struck. In light of very few technical ailments for this pretty, lustrous example, just honest, light wear leads to the AU-55 grade, including innumerable luster grazes in the fields. Interestingly, the portrait really displays no obvious signs of circulation, and this and the eagle's motif both display lovely matte frost. Housed in a S.S. Central America PCGS holder.
