Description: Daylight savings time has just taken place as this coin enters into Scotsman auction catalog. Until the mid-19th century, nations the world over actually kept their own local time, with no consistency across the globe. Indeed, some countries actually varied the length of an hour to accommodate that portion of the day for which the sun would be shining, resulting in catastrophic confusion. Even within the United States, there was little to no agreement on how to set time. At one point, simple travel by train from west coast to east required resetting one's watch more than twenty times! Eventually, things came to a head, and in 1884, the U.S. convened delegates from twenty-five countries to discuss and settle upon setting the prime meridian in Greenwich, England as the reference for all other time zones. And now, you understand why you MUST bid strong and hard on this 1913 Indian eagle. Because you LIKE daylight savings time!
