Lot Title: 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter PCGS MS-65FH
Lot Number: 434
Description: Mintage: 52,000. 75 graded MS-65 FH, 26 higher at PCGS. One of the all-time classics of the entire American numismatic compendium, a 1916 quarter in gem grade with full head details qualifies as a “perfect coin in the perfect grade”. The strike obviously plays an all-encompassing role for the “full head” designation, and although the central shield details technically were not brought up to completion (and almost never are for the 1916, unlike the 1917 type-1), the powerful impact of the dies shows at the extreme upper-right edge of the obverse, where the force of contact has brought up a delicate “fin” on the rim. As has been said from the day the 1916 became recognized as a rarity, very few were set aside for posterity, such that they appear in all grades, right down to dateless examples (which can still be differentiated from the 1917 type-1 based on the position of design elements).

At this elite level, such a cornerstone piece needs never be upgraded in any collection, nor would the owner ever need to be concerned about a lack of suitors, since the coin has remained in high demand for generations. Higher graded examples exist, of course, but nobody would denigrate a 1916 Standing Liberty quarter for grading “only” MS-65 FH, especially given the extreme lack of superior examples. Glowing chartreuse-gold mixes in subtle ruby accents at the head, while satin-grey accents swirl through the fields on the obverse of this gem. Much of the reverse has become encircled by a distinctive band of gleaming denim-grey color, ceding once more to the prevalent chartreuse tones.

By way of grading parameters, the shield does display a couple of brief hairlines near the center that can only be seen with a loupe, while the reverse appears flawless even under magnification.
