Lot Title: 1876 PCGS PR-66 (shield)
Lot Number: 413
Description: Ex-PCGS 05299.65/5055161, an old rattler holder that showed a grade of MS-65. The Scotsman Cataloger's Choice award absolutely applies to a type coin possessing the undeniable yet not overblown aesthetic eye-appeal seen here. Examining the coin under a good lamp, and at the appropriate viewing angle, reveals lovely cameo contrast that is modestly suppressed by the original color, but that is a tradeoff many collectors would accept any day, because, my-oh-my, what color it is. Vivid bands of magenta, chartreuse, cobalt, lavender-gold and purple emanate from the fields and rise up and over Liberty's motif like a spring meadow sunrise. If anything, the reverse offers even more vivid coloration, with deeply saturated violet and cobalt-gold toward the upper half, layered over a foundation of blazing yellow-peach and grapefruit. This coin has the peculiar distinction of having been once graded by PCGS as a circulation strike (MS-65), while having now magically transformed into a proof by the same esteemed grading service. On balance, one might prefer the circulation strike designation, since a far lower survival rate (from a far larger mintage) would spell out "better" absolute rarity, but this is a coin whose value may rest entirely on aesthetics, anyhow.
