Lot Title: 1936 Norfolk NGC MS-68
Lot Number: 320
Description: West Jefferson Collection. 84 graded MS-68, 3 higher at NGC. Upon first glance of the obverse, one might be led to believe that this utterly splendid Norfolk had been struck in copper, because the extraordinary and rare alchemy of malachite, deep ruby-magenta and shimmering subtle orange are highly reminiscent of a classically oxidized copper objet d'art. The effect is simply magnificent, especially as good illumination activates the sheening, potent luster on that side. The coin must be flipped over to affirm silver content, although the reverse itself is no slouch at all when it comes to eye-appeal. On this side, enchanting chartreuse dominates except at portions of the border where vivid, slender bands of rainbow color accent peripheral lettering. Many Norfolk half-dollars have been preserved at the MS-68 level (very few grade higher, though), but one wonders how it would be possible to surpass the inexhaustible eye-appeal of this example, hence the Scotsman Cataloger's Choice makes perfect sense. A truly stunning jewel destined for the collector who acknowledges that coins CAN be works of art, given a sufficient passage of time, and proper circumstances.
