Lot Title: 1864 Small Motto PCGS MS-63RB
Lot Number: 212
Description: Tim Moeller Collection. FS-401. 37 graded MS-63 RB, 150 higher at PCGS. An all-time classic in a series that gets far too little attention from collectors, the 1864 "small motto" has the rare distinction of inaugurating an American series as one of the true keys (as with, for example, the 1916 Standing Liberty quarter, and the 1836 reeded edge half-dollar). A substantial majority of mint red color adheres to the surface, relieved by only modest portions of faded brick-orange and a few magenta highlights on the obverse that lead to the red-brown designation. The surface, indeed, appears to be exempt from any nefarious "process", as the remaining presence of a noticeable carbon patch at the lower obverse attests. A terrific example for the collector who desires truly original quality.
