Description: Kirk Paulenen Collection. Collector appeal: "B+" for the average grade range estimate of VF to AU. The consignor made tremendous strides toward assembling a complete set of early small cents, although 1872 and 1877 are not included (nor is 1856, of course). Still, what is present offers a phenomenal opportunity for the lucky high bidders, as virtually every single coin herein offers details at or above the EF grade level, excepting perhaps 1858 SL, 1861, and 1867, which still meet VF or better sharpness standards. An additional 1873 "closed 3" in Good occupies an extra space. We offer a number of highlighted grade estimates as follows: 1857 (AU/cleaned), 1858 LL (AU), 1860 (AU/improperly toned), 1862 (AU), 1863 (AU), 1864 bronze (UNC/dipped), 1864 "L" (XF/light scratches), 1866 (XF/scratched), 1868 (XF), 1869 (XF/lightly cleaned), 1870 (XF), 1871 (AU/cleaned), 1873 (AU/improperly toned), 1878 (AU/cleaned), 1908-S (AU but struck on a streaky planchet), and 1909-S (XF/cleaned).
