Lot Title: 1907 High Relief, Wire Rim NGC MS-64+
Lot Number: 822
Description: There are probably several claimants to the throne of "America's most beautiful coin", but the 1907 High Relief double-eagle makes a very strong case for that title. Much ink has been spilled in auction catalogs to describe the beauty of the coin, to such extent that the present cataloger probably cannot add much. So instead, let us celebrate the effort and technical success of Saint-Gaudens' creation by drawing a parallel to another extraordinary work of beauty contemporary with the 1907 double-eagle: the Great Mosque of Djenné, Mali. Located near the Bani River, it was entirely constructed in 1907 on a raised platform that protects it from flooding by the river. Due to the variable climate, much care is required to maintain the structure. Annually, the citizens of Djenné volunteer to repair and update the mosque, which requires that thousands of buckets of new plaster be smeared onto the walls, filling and protecting cracks that form under the heat. As the photo demonstrates, it is a work of remarkable beauty, and has stood the testament of time.

NGC seems unwilling or unable to grant this near-sensational example full Gem status, and examining the surface very carefully fails to reveal any individually grade-limiting factors. Each side displays the exceedingly fine, granular matte texture for which the issue is famous, and there are none of the "burn spots" often associated with coin-to-coin rub (from storage). There is not even a single blunt contact mark to be found on either side, with perhaps the only noticeable contact being a couple of ticks resting upon rays on either side of Liberty's person. Indeed, the obverse is actually less affected by handling than the reverse, where inspection finds a vertical mark toward the left of the eagle's wing, and several random tiny points toward the upper part of this same wing.
