Description: 11 graded MS-61, 9 higher at PCGS. Although many uncirculated examples of the 1855-S were found during the recovery of the S.S. Central America treasure, it remains an exceptionally elusive issue in mint-state at PCGS, as the population report indicates. It is unclear whether the present offering represents a recovered piece since no such indication appears on the slab. Given the lower mint-state level, unexpectedly few abrasions appear on either side, but the devices offer slightly hairlined glossy texture, suggesting past conservation.
