Description: 1911-D obviously gets much acclaim as the key to a quarter-eagle series, but many collectors fail to realize that the same date in the half-eagle series is actually significantly rarer than its smaller cousin. It just happens to share "key status" with a couple of other issues in the series that are MUCH rarer and that make the $5 series less popular than the $2.50 series. Practically full mint bloom endows this choice about-uncirculated example with much of the original "new" appeal, although several rather prominent carbon blemishes will be found on each side. Terrific sharpness shows only a minimum level of wear at the cheek, central portions of the feathers, and on the eagle's shoulder.
